John LoPresto Sr.

“It’s Him!” – A Portrait of a Living Memory.

There are moments in an artist’s career that stay with them forever. For me, that moment happened when I presented this portrait to Camille LoPresto for her 79th birthday. As she saw the face of her late husband, John Sr., she gasped and said, “It’s Him!” Every time I watch the video of that reveal, my heart skips a beat. It is the ultimate testament to the power of art to bridge the gap between memory and presence.

The Heart of the Tribute

John LoPresto Sr. passed away in 2021, just four months after I met his son. This portrait was created with deep reverence, intending to bring a sense of comfort and a “return” of his spirit to the family home. Working from a cherished reference photo, I aimed to capture the exact spark and character that defined his life.

The Mastery of Dry Brush Oil

To achieve a level of realism that feels soft and atmospheric rather than clinical, I utilized the dry brush oil on canvas technique. This meticulous process allows for:

  • Lifelike Texture: Building up micro-layers of oil paint with a dry brush to recreate the familiar features and warmth in his eyes.

  • Ethereal Quality: A seamless, soft-focus finish that avoids the heavy texture of traditional oils, making the portrait feel like a vivid, living memory.

  • Timeless Detail: Meticulous attention to every nuance, ensuring that the final piece carries the weight and dignity of its subject.
