LADY IN ULTRAMARINE: The Infinite Depth

A Trilogy of Stillness. A Study in Ethereal Submergence.

“Lady in Ultramarine” is the final movement in my trilogy of lockdown reflections, standing alongside “Lady in Pink” and “Lady in Gold.” Conceived during the 2020 lockdowns, this piece explores the deepest levels of meditation—where the boundaries of the self dissolve into the infinite, “aqueous” blue of the unknown.

The Vision: Submerged Consciousness

If the Pink study was about vulnerability and the Gold study was about biological transformation, Ultramarine is about the spirit.

  • The Power of Blue: Using the rarest and deepest of blues, I wanted to capture the feeling of being submerged in water or drifting through deep space. It is a color of absolute calm and profound mystery.

  • The “Luminous Ghost” Effect: Using the Dry Brush Oil technique, her features are rendered to look almost translucent—as if she is a spirit emerging from the pigment. There is a “glow” to the skin that suggests a light source coming from within the blue itself.

  • The Weightless State: The composition is designed to feel weightless. By stripping away heavy backgrounds, the subject seems to float, mirroring the mental state of deep meditation where time and gravity cease to exist.

The Vision: A Work in Progress

As with the other pieces in this series, “Lady in Ultramarine” is a living work that I continue to “brew” in my studio.

  • The 3D Future: I am currently exploring how to use Acrylic Skins and Stone-Couture to add physical “currents” to the canvas. I imagine 3D blue textures that mimic the movement of deep-sea water or crystalline structures, breaking the 2D plane to bring the viewer into her world.

Technical Mastery: The Foundation

  1. Dry Brush Oil: Expertly applied to create the soft, smokey transitions between the deep blue shadows and the luminous highlights of the face.

  2. Monochromatic Depth: A focus on the “Ultramarine” spectrum to prove that a single color can contain a whole universe of emotion.
